Still hunting for rose hip pickers and seed removers

A few days before the world's first Rose Hip Festival in Søndervig, which will be held on Sunday, 14 August, the organiser Søndervig Centerforening is still on the lookout for more participants in the contests "Rose Hip Recipe of the Year", Who can pick the most rose hips in a set time period while only wearing a bathing suit?" and "Who can remove the seeds from the most rose hips in a set time period?"

Dorthe Frydendahl, destination manager of Holmsland Klit Turistforening and co-organiser of the Rose Hip Festival in Søndervig says that at present there are only three signed up for the recipe contest, one for the picking contest and none for the seed removing contest.

There is till time to sign up for the contests via email post@sondervig.dk or telephone +45 96 593 597 and, according to Dorthe Frydendahl, the honour of winning, a trophy, and a gift certificate to Søndervig's shops and restaurants are at stake.

The idea behind the Rose Hip Festival was to turn a problem to an advantage, explains Dorthe Frydendahl. "Rose hips are incredibly hardy and have therefore often been used as shelter belts in poor coastal soils such as in dunes in connection with summer cottage areas built up in the 1950s and onwards.

Today rose hips are not so well-loved by summer cottage owners. That is a shame according to the Kurt Kjær, chef and owner of Restaurant Sandgaarden in Søndervig and co-organiser of the Rose Hip Festival. There are plenty of reasons to eat rose hips. They contain lots of vitamins, particularly vitamin C. There are 1,700-2,000 mg vitamin C per 100 g dried rose hip, i.e. one cup of rose hip contains as much vitamin C as 35-40 oranges.

Danish rose hips are especially rich in vitamin C because the colder the climate rose hips grow in the higher the vitamin C content in the fruits. On Sunday, August 14 it will be possible to taste and experience the preparation of his reknowned rose hip compôt.
The Rose Hip Festival also has fun for the young and young at heart. There will be games such as "Rose Hip Tape Statue", "Rose Hip Fly Swatter Badminton" and the possibility of making a rose hip necklace.

At SuperBest in Søndervig there will be taste samples of rose hip ice cream and rose hip bread. You will also be able to see how to make rose hip snaps. The bakery Bageriet Ejvinds in Søndervig will be selling special rose hip buns and bread.

The Rose Hip Festival in Søndervig will end with a SPECIAL two course menu with a rose hip twist including two glasses of wine for a total of DKK 299,- per person at Restaurant Sandgaarden in Søndervig.
