Amber safari.

Go exploring for amber along the coast. Amber can be found in many shapes and sizes and colours- from a pale gold to a rich brown-gold coloure. Some times you may be lucky and find a piece of amber containing an insect or a piece of wood.

Amber is a natural product made of fossil resin from exstinct pine trees, that grew in west Europe and were brought to Denmark during the ice- age, with the ice.

Amber has been popular as material for jewellery for 100's of years, and was even used as a form of currency back then.

Lumps of Amber however, do not just lye on the beach, glimting in the sun. They hide in the sea weed that has come ashore, which means you have to keep your eyes open. The beast amber weather, is just after a storm, where pleanty of sea weed has washed up on the shore.

Amber or stone?

  • Amber comes in many different coloures, which can easily be mixed up with stones. There are some simple ways of finding out whether its amber or not.
  • Knock it gently against your teeth. If it feels soft and does not make a sharp sound it is most likely amber.
  • Rub the piece of amber along your jumper and then hold it towards a piece of hair. If the hair is attracted to the lump, its amber.
  • Place the lump in a glass of salt water. If its amber it will float.
  • Amber is softer than rock, and will therefor feel warmer whne you hold it in your hand.
